Coming Home

Exploring Kinetic Type

This video was my first foray into the world of motion graphics. The premise was to use a favorite song as the basis for exploring kinetic typography — the practice of animating letterforms to capture attention and entertain. I choose Leon Bridges’ Coming Home. I began the video by animating the formation of his album cover and then used kinetic type to illustrate the text of his lyrics.

Creating Terror

The Title Sequence

My second motion graphics assignment was a look at the art of title sequence creation. The goal was to design a horror movie title animation in the style of Kyle Cooper’s opening credit sequence from the film Se7en. Additionally, all of the video included in the project needed to be personally shot and your image had to appear on screen at some point during the presentation. With the help of a candle, corn syrup, and a little food colouring, I created this.

Making Space

Lower Thirds

My third motion graphics project was the creation of a news intro and lower thirds. As a challenge, I decided to not use any prerendered video and created all of my assets directly in After Effects. For the theme, I decided I wanted to take the concept of “World News” literally. To create the planet in the introduction, I wrapped three photos around a sphere: the earth during the day, at night, and covered in clouds — which were then layered and transitioned between. I then applied the atmosphere, text, and animation. The sun was designed using nothing but a sphere and layered fractal noise. Once the planets were complete I added the lower thirds and placed the whole animation inside a particle effect to imitate stars.

Nordvested

A Winning Proposal

In 2017 I traveled to Copenhagen to participate in KEA College’s design charrette. Split into multidisciplinary teams of students from around the world we were given a week to design a proposed solution to a community blocked development in the city’s northwest quadrant. Myself, two architects, a journalist, and an HR manager created this video illustrating our vision of “Nordvested” and won the competition.

Into the Blur

Concept Art

The vast majority of my sketches and mock-ups are executed in Adobe Illustrator, as the control and editability make fine-tuning future iterations much more efficient and manageable. The gallery to the left contains a collection of concept renderings created for a mixed media cinemagraphic novel I have been working on titled “Into The Blur”.

Oshawa 420

Logo Vectorization

The Oshawa 420 Wing of the Canadian Legion approached me with a request to design a digital version of their classic hand-painted logo. Their goal was to print a number of large format banners and marketing materials and they needed something which could be easily scaled. The images to the right showcase the original crest along with the vectorization I illustrated to fit their needs.

Vitruvian Energy

An Interactive PDF

To the left is a render of an interactive PDF I created for a company called Vitruvian Energy. Compiled into the PDF were several playable videos, pull tabs, and links that could be expanded to reveal additional information. The functionality of an interactive PDF allows you to build elements formerly only available to web designers. This means you can now create complex multipage feature-rich documents which can be easily referenced and copied without the use of an internet connection. Click the image to expand.
